I am trying to covert all my sons old disney tapes to dvd for my daughter. I bought a dvd recorder with a built in vhs for dubbing and I tought I was set.I paid like $ 250.00. I was able to copy the first tape ANTZ , ( Dream Works Pictures) with no problems. Then I tried A Bugs Life, ( Disney / Pixar) and it said copy protected cannot copy. I tried other tapes with no success. Disney, Pixar, Dream Works, Universal. For whatever reason Antz worked now nothing else will. ANy help I can get would be appreciated. Hi John,

Almost all pre recorded VHS tapes are copy protected. What you want to do is legal and you can do it with a device like “Sima T120 GoDVD”. It removes the copy guard and enhances the picture. You plug your source into it and plug it into the input of your recorder. In your case you need a separate VHS player. Feed the output of the VHS through the Sima and into the input on your DVD recorder.

I got mine at Best Buy. It was $ 49.95. It works well and I had no problems with it.

Here is an example of one – http://www.heartlandamerica.com/browse/item.asp?PIN=54817&

My copies came out pretty good. Not DVD quality but certainly acceptable viewing quality.

How do I convert songs on Cassette Tapes to MP3 songs using PC?

Question : How do I convert songs on Cassette Tapes to MP3 songs using PC?
How do I convert songs on Cassette Tapes to MP3 songs using PC? I have a good collection of old songs on cassettes tapes (of tape recorder). Many of these songs may not be available in the market in
MP3 format. The tape recorder doesn’t have Line Out. However, there is a headphone jack in that tape recorder. Now, what wire type (e.g. in case of telephones we say RJ14 to specify a particular Telephone Jack. Similarly, I wish to know what type of wire in this case) would I require to connect the headphone of tape recorder to sound card of PC (Mic) to transfer those songs to PC. Then, what type of software (please specify name) will I require to record these songs as files on PC and what type of software (please specify name) will I require to split those songs as individual MP3 songs (basically a music editing software that can allow me to split a music file so that I can split those songs after a song starts and ends by listening to it).

Please guide me thoroughly on this issue.

First purchase a stereo audio cable like this one (http://www.datapro.net/images/1221.jpg) from your electronics store.

Then download a free program like audacity here:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Plug one end of the stereo cable into the headphone jack on the tape player and the other end into the line in or microphone socket on the back of your computer.

Turn the tape player volume up all the way and open up audacity. Select the Line in or microphone in audacity as where you will be recording from.

Press the record button in Audacity and press play on your tape player.

After one track has played pause the tape recorder and stop recording in Audacity. Then go file>export mp3 track. This lets you save it as an mp3 track. Do this for all tracks on the tape and you should be right.

In my opinion though maybe buy the cds? I can’t guarantee quality will be very good recording from a tape.

is it safe for the heads of a canon xl1 to rewind and replay tapes?

Question : is it safe for the heads of a canon xl1 to rewind and replay tapes?
I recorded like 4 1-hour tapes on my canon xl1, I’d rather use a dv deck to play and capture them on my computer, but I don’t have a deck. Somebody told me it was ok to use the camera itself, but I’m afraid it will wear out the heads if I do this often, although this is the first time I’m doing this at this level of hours. Any advice anybody? Thank you very much, God bless.

Most people use the camera to play back/capture the video, Its not going to make any difference to you, unless you can afford the cost of a dedicated player, another option (as long as you don’t record in LP is to get a consumer camera and use that to play the tapes.

As long as you keep the heads clean and not re use tapes too often you will be fine.

although no longer available at Sony you should be able to get one if you do a little searching

Dicta phones & Tapes

Dictaphones or Digital Voice Recorder (DVR) are ideal for recording voice notes, interviews, conferences, meetings and telephone conversations. The term Dictaphone is a brand on the version that the tapes used to record shows like the new Digital Voice Recorder (DVR) preclude the inclusion of audio in memory.

I advise you not buy dictation without variable memory because you will always be limited to the size of internal memory, and you will not be able to extend it.

The quality of digital voice recording depends on the camera, microphone, intake manifold, the rate of signal sampling and method of coding. The human ear can detect frequencies from 20Hz to 20kHz. normal speech is between 0.3 to 3.4 kHz to understand that what the person said the band from 0.3 to 3.4 kHz is sufficient. The rest is just extra noise. So, if you express cassette only, now under the dictaphone 4kHz want (Nikewist under sentence, should the sampling rate 8 kHz). If you include other sounds (music, falling objects), then you should buy Dictaphone 20kHz (40kHz sampling frequency). But remember that bigger is the wider the band, the more the memory of spending.

Is there any audio hardware or equipment that can transfer sound from tapes to something digital?

0

Question : Is there any audio hardware or equipment that can transfer sound from tapes to something digital?
I have a container full of cassettes that I’ve recorded where I’ve taped sound bites from radio talk shows 2 stuff on TV (using a karaoke machine & putting the mic near the TV speaker). So far, I’ve made CDs from some of these sound bites by using a mid-tech mp3 player & computers. & once I get a USB cable & study a lil bit, perhaps I’ll use my cell phone 2 record sound bites from my tapes. But my question is is there any technology, such as a tape deck connected to a computer or something like that, that can directly record sound bites from a tape & thus make it digital? I assume that I would need a professional audio techie to do such a task or that this kind of equipment would be incredibly pricey.

Very easy to do actually. You can hook the rear audio outs on the deck to the rca jacks on a sound card on a computer.

For instance, my creative xfi sound card has rca jacks on it that would take the audio outs mentioned from a tape player. Then I can record with the software that came with the card or there are free recording programs on the net or you can even use sound recorder in Windows.

Another option for cassette deck to pc would be a double rca male to 1/8 inch stereo male adapter that would plug into the 1/8 inch stereo input on a standard pc soundcard.

Another option is a USB cassette player made specifically for the purpose like this one for example:

Does the Panasonic HVX200 take any tapes at all?

Question : Does the Panasonic HVX200 take any tapes at all?
I’m looking at the Panasonic HVX200. I know it says it records on p2 cards. Especially since I’m shooting long form weddings, I can’t afford the ones with a lot of space. In a price comparison I thought it said something about DVCPRO tapes. But aren’t those about $ 30 each or more?

YES on tapes. NO on DVCPro tapes.

It uses standard MiniDV tapes. On those tapes, you can record in DV25 mode only – 480 lines (if NTSC).

On the P2 side, you can record any of the camera modes, including DV25.
