my family takes pictures, like family pictures, starting on thanksgiving.
(before dinner, all dressed up, hair done! haha)
but if you have most of the family you’ll be sending christmas cards to over at your house during thanksgiving, i’d suggest taking a few copies of your kids’ school pictures from august or september.
another idea would be to go to one of those professional photography places towards the end of November, and send them all out by December 6th or around there, just in case the mail carrier is slow or there’s a malfunction. that way you’ll have enough time to fix any problems or changed addresses before christmas.

i have an olympus e-500 that i’m quite pleased with, it is a dslr and the kit had two lenses in it when i got it new.
you just have to go look at cameras and see which ones feel right in your hands,
nikon and canon make excellent dslr cameras as does olympus, and they make great lenses also. so go shopping and looking and asking questions of other photogs.

An entry level SLR is a great option. Canon Rebel, Nikon D300, etc. Hands on and individual instruction are better, also stuff with homework.. it forces you to take it more seriously. You can certainly look at local adult education courses and look for art centers that have educational classes. I HIGHLY recommend getting a cheap 35mm camera and some b&w film and taking a basics of film photography that includes darkroom time.
