My husband gave me his old phone — a Smartphone. I have a very basic plan, but I liked the QWERTY keyboard and GPS. Somehow our wireless provider “knew” that I switched to a Smartphone and automatically billed me more for a data plan. How did they know? I assume the phone sends out some kind of signal. Do “quick messaging” phones (like the LG neon) do the same thing? Thanks

When the phone is registered to have service,they know by the serial number what kind of phone you have.Usually,like my phone with sprint if i go online and into my account on sprint.com then i see a picture of my phone next to my phone number.It doesnt send out a signal.

When I bought my smart phone off eBay I had to pay for the smart plan from Alltel. I don’t believe this has changed at all. If you decide to still get one you will have to activate it through the phone. Alltel needs to change it… Oh well. Good luck.
