Question : opinions about skype phone internet service and cost and hardware needed?
I’m considering using Skype internet phone service. Would like to hear opinions from users about it, also is there a monthly fee? What kind of hardware do I need to purchase? I understand the software can be downloaded directly from their website. Is this correct?

I would definitely not recommend it over a landline. It’s really inexpensive, extremely easy to use and understand, and works well enough. All you would need is a microphone or some sort of headset to speak into. You don’t need any hardware, but fast internet would be recommended(over 3MBPS). You can easily download the software from their site, and unlimited calls for the US are $ 2.95 a month. It’s not the best voice quality, but why complain when it is so cheap? I think a better alternative would be “Magic Jack.” It costs about $ 40 for the actual hardware, and all you do is install it on your computer. It connects to the USB port, and then it allows you to connect your phone line directly to your computer. You get your own number, and you can continue using all of your homes around the home. Magic Jack costs $ 20 a year, and that is for unlimited calls. The reviews on it are pretty solid, and I would prefer it over Skype. The reason being is that Skype only allows calls over your computer, while you being there. To answer calls you have to physically answer them. Magic Jack works like a regular phone causing the phones to ring in the house. It works over the internet, the same was Skype does. Magic Jack is a bit cheaper ($ 20 yearly, $ 3 monthly for Skype). Be sure your internet can put up with these services, try to get at least 3MBPS. Test your internet speed at: Http://SpeedTest.Net if you are not sure of your internet speed.

Skype is hard to beat for for long distance calling. If you already use Skype from your PC you can’t beat it for USA/Canada domestic calling if you purchase “Skype Unlimited”. For $ 29.95 you get unlimited USA/Canada calling for 1 full year. If you get the Skype CIT-400 adapter and phone, you can do it without turning on your PC.
But, Skype is not a “home phone replacement service” – they do not have 911 emergency calling and advise as such.

For home phone replacement service there are “numerous” to choose from. I use InPhonex as my home phone replacement service because they provide 911 in Canada (where I live), even though InPhonex is a USA company.
I also use CallCentric a lot, which I like (but no 911 in Canada).
Packet8 may be a good choice, too.
I have more information on my web site CQ VoIP Call (link is in my profile).

Call quality is an ongoing debateable issue. Many factors affect call quality.
If you have at least 1.5 Mbs HighSpeed Internet with your phone company, but you still have to pay them for your regular phone, it would be redundant to have full service VoIP at same time as regular phone (just keep using Skype for long distance instead).
However, if you want to pull the plug on your phone company (like I did), then try highspeed Internet service with your cable company (if you have one). Then, with cable and a VoIP full service company, it is possible to completely pull the plug on Ma Bell (or AT&T). Actually, AT&T has a VoIP service too, called “AT&T CallVantage” (could be worth a look).

So, there are many options – just depends on your strategy and what you really want to do.
Oh, yes there is also the issue of 911 access during power outages….

Question : Need Internet Phone Service like SKYPE that will allow me to make and record phone calls from my computer?
I am looking for an Internet Phone Service that will allow me to make and record phone calls directly from my computer. I would like a software solution without any additional hardware equipment, using only the service providers interface and features. It is also important to be able to record long phone conversations (30 – 45 minutes) and not be limited to only a few minutes.

How are Skype out and other VOIP calls routed?

1

Question : How are Skype out and other VOIP calls routed?
How does the call get from the public Internet onto the telephone network? Does Skype (and the other VOIP operators) own equipment in each country to provide the interface? Where is it situated, in each telephone exchange, or centrally?
Mali, the question concerned calls that go from the internet to land phones.

I believe your assumption is correct.
That seems to be the only real way to get onto the PSTN network. There probably has to be an Internet VoIP to PSTN gateway box situated at each local area exchange (or they rent one from the local exchange, the same as they rent the DID phone numbers and then re-market the numbers to users).

This is probably why SkypeIN is not available in all countries or all area codes. I live in Canada and we cannot get SkypeIN number in Canada yet (I’ve asked them numerous times in past years). I have had one in USA though.
