I know that if you want to connect your Sirius / XM radio to your car, you can use an FM Direct adapter. Can I do the same thing for my iPod? Would it work? What is the difference between an FM Direct adapter and an FM modulator?

I do not see why not, is as long as the connections.
No. The FM-direct adapter for XM works because the FM modulator is built into the satellite radio unit. The actual adapter is just a relay that cuts off the OEM antenna signal while connecting the FM output from the satellite radio. The adapter does not generate the FM signal; the XM Radio unit does.
An iPod does not have a built-in FM modulator, so it won’t work with the FM-direct adapter.
