File Recovery software questions?
Question : File Recovery software questions?
I have a couple questions on file recovery software and downloads, I noticed some are free and others you have to pay for, is one better than the other? Are the free ones good or could they potentially lead to more viruses? Do you recomend using them?

One of the better free ones is “Recuva”–it’s safe and works well. It’s from Piriform, the same folks that provide “”CCleaner” and “Defraggler”.

On their builds page, they have several types. The Installer version is installed in Windows just like other Windows programs. During installation, you have the option of installing the Yahoo Toolbar. I suggest you “unclick” it as you are already using Yahoo.
I like the Portable Version. It can be installed on a memory stick and that way used on any computer without having to install it at all. It can also be installed on your regular computer, but there will be no entry in the Start Menu for it. It has to be run from a command prompt window, the Run command, or a desktop icon can be created for it and a path assigned. The installation is very simple, use Windows Explorer to extract the files from the downloaded ZIP file. That’s all.
One word of warning – after you have searched the drive and selected the files you want to recover, you need to use the Recuva program to “copy” those files to a different drive – you do not want to write to the same drive, as you might over-write the data you are trying to recover. External drives or thumb drives are handy for this.
