There are a number of choices.

Depending on what operating system is on your PC you may already have a good solution built in. If you have Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise, or Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate you’re in luck since you could simply enable Remote Desktop on the system and connect using the Remote Desktop connection client. If you are going to be accessing it across the internet you would need to forward port 3389 from your router to the internal IP address of your desktop computer. Then you would be able to connect to your desktop computer from your laptop or any other internet connected PC assuming your external IP address is static or relatively static.

If you are stuck with a Home edition of any version of windows remote desktop is not an option. Instead you could opt to use a free program such as VNC. There are a couple different versions of this but they all serve the same purpose. – http://realvnc.org – http://tightvnc.org

In the case of VNC you would again still need to forward the port that VNC is running on on your router to the internal IP address of the PC you want to connect remotely to.

An alternative and easier/less technically involved method would be to utilize Logmein.com ‘s FREE edition of Logmein. With this you would install the client software on your target PC and then you would be able to log into your system via Logmein.com website.

There are quite a few other options but these (3) are normally the ones I recommend.
