I am going to watch DVD’s and also i have a HD Direct TV box — so do i really need the 1080P resolution?Also do i need to buy a new DVD player that will look good on my new flat screen LCD HD TV?

The only thing you can watch right now in 1080p is the HD DVD or Blue Ray so if you have one of those then 1080p might be the way to go.
I also have the DTV HD box, and mine looks perfectly outstanding using a 480p projector. I imagine 720p would look even better.
For now, if it was me, I’d save the $ $ $ .
On another note, if you have the space, have you looked at projection instead of the flat TV? Much more bang for the buck

all digital broadcasts are in 480 ,720p, or 1080i.
A 1080p is especially nice for non-broadcast use. A blu-ray disk or using it as a computer monitor will be much nicer on a 1080p.
I have a 720p LCD on my directv HD box. Not much actually comes across in 1080i, so it’s not a big deal. My blu-ray disks look great too. But when I use it as a monitor, 720 lines is not enough!
A good analog DVD player does not look very good on a big digital screen. You need a new one.
