I am going to order contact lenses online…does the B.C. number and the diameter number really matter?
Question : I am going to order contact lenses online…does the B.C. number and the diameter number really matter?
I am going to order contact lenses online, but I have an issue.
I plan on gettiing O2 Optics, but they dont offer my B.C. number which is 8.4, but they do have 8.6. They also dont have my Diameter number mine is 14.0 and they only offer 14.3…..do these numbers really affect anything that much….I figured the contact lenses are cheaper than the other ones, so they have less choices, can you help me, I am down to my last (2) pairs….Thank You

You need to get the exact same lenses so do not order them if they do not have your exact same numbers. Why not use a different company online that does offer your prescriptions exactly. You cannot order lenses that are not right for you.

Base curve radius is usually abbreviated BC.Typical values are from 8.0 to 10.0 mm. The base curve is the radius of the sphere that the back of the contact lens (the part that actually rests on your eye) describes. Contact lenses must fit well to the wearer’s cornea in order to be comfortable and to facilitate tear exchange and oxygen transmission.
In everyday practice, if contact lenses feel “loose” and slide easily a smaller base curve may work better. A large base curve may be needed if they feel tight. Lenses with smaller base curves are referred to as “steep”. Often a lens manufacturer will only make a soft lens in a few curves and in a limited amount of diameters. This is due to their rather forgiving nature when it comes to fitting.
If you go with a larger diameter and a shallower BC, your lenses might feel “loose”. Perhaps an optician near you offers a free lens fitting and you could try the 8.6/14.3 before you place the order.

The B.C. and the diameter really matter because if you get a different one than your prescription, they will not fit on your eye correctly. If you are using 1-800- CONTACTS and they do not have your size, you can also buy contacts online at http://www.walmart.com.
