I have an internet connection which is currently connected to a cable broadband ntl. my brother has a playstation 3 in the neighbouring bedroom and i would like to know which hardware i should be looking into. plus to build up my knowledge.

A broadband Modem Router is something which is connected to the end of a telephone line and your Telephone service provider would be catering for the need of telephone and broadband internet through that line.
A broadband cable router is something which is connected to the end of a Cable and your Cable TV service provider would be catering for the need of Satellite TV and broadband internet through that line.

1) The cable modem goes through your coaxial cable jacks and a DSL modem uses phone lines. Both offer high speed internet, but the term broadband, while it started with telecommunicaitons now just refers to internet with speeds over 56k.
2) You said you have a cable modem, so you already are using high speed internet, so all you would need is a router. Common brands are Linksys, D-Link, Belkin, and 2Wire. This way you can have multiple devices using the same connection. You may need to get a bigger/faster internet plan if the internet moves slow, since gaming will reduce the bandwith in addition to any other things you may be doing online, e.g., YouTube, downloading, etc…

Generally, speaking the main difference is how the Internet is connected to the device. DSL modems use a standard telephone line, and filters so that a single telephone line can deliver both Internet and receive or make voice calls at the same time.
Cable Modems, use and share the same coax line that they use to provide you cable tv over by installing a splitter.
If the DSL modem or Cable modem contains a router with multiple ethernet ports all you need to do is connect the PC and the PS3 to the modem/router. If it doesn’t you will need to buy a router.
If both the PC and the PS3 are set to use DHCP to get an IP address, they should be fairly easy to connect to each other. Basically you get the PC to connect to the Internet through the router. The router is connected to the DSL/Cable Modem, Then setup the PS3 and connect it to the router.
At this point it’s just a matter of discovering each others IP address the router assigns you and set your firewall to allow communication unrestricted in your local area network zone.

You do not have broadband if you have a cable connection. Broadband runs through a phoneline just like dial up because basically thats what it is. Cable uses a cable connection the runs into the router so look for that. So all you need is a router, 54 Mbps is standard but it goes up from there. Most routers can be used for broadband or cable and normally they will specify. I doubt you need to worry about having a 10/100/1000 connection but if you have a gigabit connection you should definatly get one or suffer a hefty performance loss. You may look into getting a wireless router so you don’t have to worry about more wires. It’s early so I may have botched this, lol but I hope it helps.
EDIT: For the guy above me, cable is strictly cable, sattellite uses broadband. It’s all the bandwidth a commercial one will handle right now.
