Question : Do you HAVE to ask your eye doctor before switching contact lens brands?
I’m currently using biomedics 55 and they feel like my eyes are suffocating! I talked to my eye doctor about it and he said that we can try O2 Optix but I found out that my insurance doesn’t cover another contact lens fitting until next January. I didn’t want to pay $ 115 for the fitting so I said never mind. But can I just order the O2 Optix anyway?

as long as your perscription is less than a year old you should be okay, you should be able to order new contacts just give them your perscription and if you don’t have it you could call your eye doctor and get it over the phone

The prescription you have for contact lenses is only for the specific contact lenses that were fit by your doctor!!!
Every time you want to wear new contact lenses you need a new contact lens fitting. Contact lenses come in different materials, sizes, types and all fit differently.
Contact lenses are a medical device and need to be fit by a qualified professional. The material for Biomedics 55 is 45% polymer ocufilcon D and O2 optix is 67% lotrafilcon B, also O2 optix does not come in the same parameters as the biomedics 55….
$ 115 is a very steep price just for a new contact lens fitting… does that price include your eye test? It is possible that price includes your eye test and the price may be cheaper for just a contact lens fitting! It is possible that you may need a different type of contact lens… did you have a follow up appointment with your eye doctor yet? They should always have follow up appointments to make sure the contact lenses are working well for you.
I think you should speak with your eye doctor about this issue

Nope. It is like any other controlled item that needs and RX. You just can’t change Heart meds midstream without the Doctor either. Unless you do it illegally, and that is snot a good idea becuase if the new brand is not checked on your eye first, it might cause dammage to your cornea if it fits wrong and no one has looked at it first. You can bite the bullet and pay for the chair time and get a trial lense to try. I bet your phone/internet/cable tv Bill is more than that a month. These are your eyes! Simple as that.

You can order any brand as long as you have a prescription under a year old.
The downside to ordering new contacts you’ve never had before may be that they do not fit well…and you’re stuck with contacts that you cannot wear.
Can your optometrist just give you a trial pair without a formal fitting (which I think he’s way overcharging on that! mine was only $ 45…no insurance)??
Or your other option is to order contacts you have worn before you used the biomedics 55. If you were happy with them, they can at least hold you over til your insurance will pay for another fitting.
