First, why do you need a Canon xl2. I know Canon are great, but there are plently of other 3 CCD camera out there. Check out Panasonic, they are puting out great stuff for the money.

Next, you can make a good short on less of a camera. look at lower cost digital options. You could even try making it first with a really cheap camera from ebay. They when you can get the resources together with a better camera you are ready to go with a bunch of lesson already learned.

Try renting the camera! or, check with a local college and find out if they have film department. Get a student film maker to direct or be your DP and he can borrow the camera from the school.

Work with other film makers. You PA on there film, they shoot your film with there camera. In Rhode Island we have a whole group called the RIFC doing this.(If you happen to live in Rhode Island or nearby, email me from my profile and I will point you toward the organization. Use Craig’s list to do this networking in your area.

Ebay, Craig’s list and Pawn Shops are good options for buying used Cameras. My main camera is from Ebay, my back-up from a yard sale, and I now shopping for an upgrade. The key is to research and know what you need, so when you see a deal you can grab it. If you know what you need you will avoid buying a used camera just for the price. A good deal is not a good deal if you can use it for your application.

Good Luck!
