No antivirus or antispyware protection is perfect but a good mixture of the two will help you clean your system and hopefully keep it clean.
I have listed a few antivirus, anti spyware applications that are available for download and are completely free: I will not get involved with the rights and wrongs of each package or their effectiveness, whatever you do, just make sure you have one of each type installed, updated and fully working:

The best trial version I’d recommend is Kaspersky (either Antivirus, or Internet Security.)
The best free antivirus I recommend is Avira (http://www.free-av.com ).

AVG free is also a pretty decent virus scanner. You can get it from http://www.download.com type AVG Free

McAffe (www.mcafee.com) is what I’ve use and recommend since it updates all the required files without any action from you. If you’re not really savy when it comes to things like that use that one. If you can remember to update periodically then I’d recommend Trend Micro PC-cillin (www.trendmicro.com). The only problem is if you forget to update your dat files you could become infected. Both of these two offer anti-virus and anti-spyware as part of their main product no need for 2 seperate programs.

I don’t use any of the free security solutions. Not that I don’t think they won’t work well in some situations, but due to how much malware is being created every day, and the fact the virus labs just can’t keep up, I prefer to be as safe as possible and so buy a suite from Panda. I have never had an infection, and receive daily and sometimes several times a day, updates.
Everyone is going to have their preferences in security software. As such, this is my preference. I don’t care for McAfee or Norton for the simple fact that they put so called “trial” software on machines which are prebuilt when the customer has not asked for any such software. These vendors know full well how difficult it is to remove this type of software, with special removal tools needed for most firewalls and anti-virus programs. Panda is the only one I know for sure that can be removed with the Windows Add/Remove applet.
Just do your homework and find one which you think is good. Because there are so many different solutions out, your choice may be completely different than ours.

After extensively researching all anti-virus products I can say the best anti-virus is Kaspersky, though NOD32 is better for computer experts. Kaspersky is the best all-round anti-virus program. NOD32 runs faster and has less software conflicts but as a consequence the user interface is difficult to use.
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.
It has been proven ESET NOD32 and Kaspersky are better than the best sellers Norton and McAfee (see the consumersearch source for reviews of the top anti-virus products). See recent tests for yourself at av-comparatives.org.
Trend Micro Antivirus is a viable alternative if you’re having a lot of trouble with software conflicts. Trend Micro rounds out the top three.
