Yes it is worth it as I have it and I can call any where in my country for as long as I like for just 10 cents a call, so make sure you get a cheap price if you go with it.

for residential… no problem…
for business… i would recommend redundant internet connections, preferably from different carriers (DSL, cable, FiOS)… connected to a multi-WAN router… and a UPS…
the down sides of VoIP are:
requires power to work…
does not play nice with fax, or other data services, such as alarm systems, etc…
single point of failure – if you lose internet you lose all phone lines…the down sides can be resolved by…
using a UPS to keep power to your VoIP system in the event of a power outage…
use the voice side of your DSL line for your fax machine and alarm system…
for single line residential customers, they already have a single point of failure, only having a single phone line – for multi line businesses, having redundant internet services, connected to a multi-WAN router, will eliminate the single point of failure, by using multiple internet connections – if one connection goes down, the other connection(s) will pick up the slack…VoIP offers many features that are not available with POTS service – portability, you can bring your phone with you anywhere you have internet service, you can have virtual extensions outside of the office.. etc… and the initial cost and recurring monthly costs are normally cheaper…

Well to start of, I am a professional in the voip field, and my opinion is it depends on WHAT you need. Lay down on the table what you really need and review the packages and plans from different providers and compare it your traditional telephone provider.
The most important thing to consider in voip phone service is the reliability of service i.e. emergency and informational contacts ( 911,411 etc), power loss etc. You need to do a research of your own.
