How can you tell if you have a key logger on your computer?
Question : How can you tell if you have a key logger on your computer?
My husband in the past has bragged about tapping his first wife’s phone conversations and now he told me that his son told him that he could control his computer remotely where he lives 150 miles away. This concerns me b/c my daughter and I have very confidential emails. Thanks for your answers.

The best thing is not to cheat on your spouse as sooner or later you will get caught with or without key logger. It is very much possible to install remote key logger on your machine via email attachment, or via internet download. However remote key loggers do not work well most of the time. Run your anti virus to detect it.

Software keyloggers that can be downloaded from the Internet are usually flagged by most anti-virus and anti-spyware scanners as malware or spyware. Even self-written keylogging programs are usually reported by the portion of the scanning process that diagnoses the purpose and activities of a program sitting on the computer, and flags accordingly.
Hardware keyloggers are usually devices that are inserted between the computer and keyboard, that captures and records every hard-pressed key on the board; those can be detected by the age-old method of eyeballing.
Of course, if your husband works in the national security or surveillance industry and has enough privileges to use such a device for personal purposes, there could be tiny, microscopic keylogging devices on the back of the keyboard or spliced into the keyboard cable that broadcasts its results in military-reserved radio frequencies to be picked up by the equally-tiny RF receiver your husband installed behind the kitchen sink, but if your husband does have those kinds of resources, I would have to delete this account and all my other web presences, go into private witness protection, change my name, carry a gun, and move to a third-world country with no extradition treaties and a national army that can be bought for private purposes with just the right amount of money.

What he is telling you is possible. I’m not going to go into detail on this page, as the technology is out already and it is real dangerous.
but lets start at the top.
a key logger would physically be placed on the computer and could be seen if you look for it. PCGod software is also available and a keystroke log could exist in the software which is not going to show up as a virus or something else since it was installed and is running normally and is part of the computer inviroment.
there is also some software packaged in hardware that can install into a computer and will send packets back to a pre-selected website. These can not be detected except by expert examination of the computer.
These items are a major concern to business and defense because they could be popped quietly into the pocket of a traveller who plugs it into a computer not knowing that it installs itself immediately.
if your hubby is bragging about this kind of stuff, i’m guessng he is trying to work his magic on you.
a way to prevent him from accessing your password is to log in from a computer he does not have access to and change the password and only work from a remote region.
you could also contact the local FBI and tell them he claims to have hacked the computer of his x-wife and claims to control it. that is a felony.
if you are concerned about confidencial emails, you will not have them with the software described above.
encryption software will not prevent someone from reading what is written unless they do not have akey, and as you are describing, the guy probably has it.
sorry for the bad news, but your hubby is a criminal, and needs to see what the law can do to change his views.
I hope this helps some
