I had a Voip company and switched back to Verizon landline phone company
I had a bad experience during a snowstorm on Feb 5th 2010, there was no
Home phone service plus the cell phone company towers were down, the cell phone Cricket Wireless , So you wanna be sure you know what your doing when your going to pick a Home phone service provider

that is why in a professional environment where communications are critical the switch over to VoIP should not be done unless there are some redundancies in place…
for residential service it is not a big deal… i mean the chances of your VoIP going out are almost equal to your POTS phone line going out… but when you are dealing with business lines where there are multiple lines, you can not rely on a single point of failure…
that is why the commercial VoIP provider that i work with offers redundant DSL lines with a multi WAN VPN router, so that if one internet service goes down, the redundant line(s) pick up the slack, and the phone lines never go down… we also advise the customers that there telephone and network equiptment should be connected to a UPS – but most businesses should already have a UPS in there telco/data closet for back up power in the event of a power outage…

A risk? How so? I would have thought it would be obvious you would lose a VoIP service during an outage. Sorry, but having a VoIP service as your sole home service is not the smartest move.
