Question : How can you check if your broadband suppliers speed is correct?
My bt broadband line is 8MB.
BT tell me i have an 8MB supply.
But when i check my line using a speedetest such as http://www.speedtest.net/ it has never shown speeds more than 1.85MB.
As a consumer how can we be sure that 8MB is really available.

You can be sure. When you run a speed test, make sure you are not doing anything on the pc. You must also use a closer server as it would give a more accurate check. You must not have any browsers open. This means no surfing, no downloading, no IMs on, in fact you should not even check your emails.
This is because if you want to know actual throughput, you have to allow the speedtest to access the entire available bandwidth. You must understand that not all ISPs can matched advertised speeds. A more creditable speed would be 70% of advertised speed.
