As with most theatre show, sometimes someone wears white and is under a spotlight, for example. Very few cameras won’t peak out the white in such a scenario. I had to control the aperature for that reason. The camera does have a “stage lighting” mode which may allow you to just leave the camera running.

That looks pretty good! When you talked about controlling the exposure to keep from peaking, what do you mean by that? i have been looking at this cam for my video work, but also to record shows at my theater. The lights don’t change a whole lot, but during slow songs, the stage lights go dimmer, and the spotlight goes on. I run the sound, so I wouldn’t be able to sit with the camera and manually control anything, just set it and let it go.
any tips on this? -

If you use a XH A1 for close ups and wide shots, couldn’t you use a macro lens or a wide angle lens and achieve the same effect?
I know that the XH A1 is definitely professional grade consumer of a camcorder, but I also know that the HV30 produces similar, almost as good results for a fraction of the cost for the consumers out there looking for near broadcast quality on a budget.

The xh-a1 is definately a better camera. I own one. I use my hv30 as a wideshot and do my close-ups with the xh-a1. Either camera has a good Standard Definition mode. The xh-a1 looks outstanding in SD. I use teh xh-a1′s presets to tweak the density of the blacks. Even on my HD TV the SD stuff looks great when burned on a standard DVD. I think for your purposes (skateboard stuff) the hv-30 would be much easier to handle because the xh-a1 is a little big and heavy.

@dteubner I was concerned shooting that short with the HV30 because it is not designed for low light. The whole thing also had to be shot on auto because I had a fairly inexperienced cameraman and we had very strict time constraints. We shot the whole thing in 90 minutes, a record for me.
Some people don’t like the content of Rough Stuff but many people complemented me on the look of it. It should also be noted all that footage is straight out of the camera, with no color correction.
